With women now having babies at an older age, this kind of story about older mums is becoming more and more common. Sarah certainly hadn’t planned to be a wrinkly mum. She’d already hit the menopause and her husband was in his nineties. Understandably, the idea of changing nappies wasn’t exactly top of her list. So when she overheard the news that she was to have an unplanned pregnancy, hers was a natural human reaction.
However, nine months later Sarah did give birth - to a baby son whom she named Isaac. But the age at which she gave birth wasn’t the only surprise factor. Isaac turned out to be the ancestor of Jesus. This was the pregnancy that kick-started the whole story of Israel and came full circle when Jesus appeared on the scene.
